Black Mirror

Black Mirror

The one you’ll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone.

Much of modern life, though seeming to promote connectivity, has had the opposite effect of fostering loneliness. Internet and social media engagement exacerbates feelings of loneliness, depression and anxiety, experts say.

Moody doodling: the perpetual low-level panic induced by age-growing and working 9-5 five days a week is real.

有时我真想回到童年无忧的岁月 — 记忆中没有无聊的事,幻想也还没沦为贬义的活动。

Sometimes I am consumed with longing for being teleported back to my childhood, when there was not a boring thing in my memory, and no one associated derogatory remarks with having illusions. In a nostalgic mood I assembled a series of my photography and mixed media work centering around the theme of “Loss of Childhood” and created a dedicated webpage showcasing these work.

List of work in the series:

1/  The Loss of Childhood. Processing sketch2018
2/  The Last Bus. Mixed media painting2017
3/  Tempus. Processing sketch2018
4/  Combustion I. Photography, Photoshop2018
5/  Combustion II. Photography, Photoshop2018
6/  Pre-iPhone Days. Used electronics, photography2018 [featured by SFMOMA]
7/  Untitled I. Painted object, saran wrap, photography2018
8/  Untitled II. Painted object, mirror, photography2018

Remarking on the evolution of media for artistic expression, the #instagirls portrait is my attempt to make scrolling the mindless scroll on Instagram a bit more mindful.

The Collection

My perfect red lips,

A healthy dose of expectations of myself.

On this earth,

What good am I,

If my life is like the dust.

红唇 是对自己的期许。
卸下 梦之后还有梦。

Spoiled Innocence

Construction projects in SoMa, San Francisco

Screen Shot 2017-04-21 at 7.42.54 PM

This series depicts the various construction projects seen in the SoMa district in San Francisco. Thanks to the tech boom, the city itself has been under rapid development in recent years, symbolized by the soaring skyscrapers and housing prices. SoMa is where all the tech start-ups cluster and seems to be in constant need for more room to accommodate the gold rushers.

These drawings are done with charcoal sticks – the smudginess of this medium conveys the right feel of “under development”, fitting the theme perfectly.

This series of quick sketches starts with the piece above, followed by five others shown below. Two unifying elements here underlying this series of paintings: rhythm (theme) and color (style).
